Rustic Sri Lanka Experience
Rural Living And Dolphin Watching
A holiday idea out of the ordinary takes you to the North West coast of Sri Lanka, still very much un-touched by tourism for a two centre holiday at two of the most unique and special properties in the island.
The Mudhouse is situated in delightful surroundings in the village of Anamaduwa, far from the tourist trail. No electricity, but all other comforts are there including modern bathrooms and open air showers all contributing to a lovely mix of ‘true’ rural living combined with all the creature comforts required for a relaxed holiday.
Kalpitiya Beach is an amazing beach location in Sri Lanka, perfect for the adventure traveller. The great attraction here are the Dolphins, found in great abundance especially between Jan-July of each year. Whales are also sighted further out to sea.
There are many beach properties in the locality that subtly mix traditional building styles using natural local materials with high-end luxury.
You can explore the local environment of the Kalpitiya peninsular, with deserted beaches, market gardens and simple villages where tourists are rarely seen.
Recommended For: Anyone wishing to experience rural Sri Lanka and village life with an unusual beach holiday.

Day 05 – Day 09
Kalpitiya

Kalpitiya Beaches
Kalpitiya gives you a unique side of Sri Lanka never to be missed. The area is well known for its picturesque lagoons, popular for shallow sea fishing and prawn farming activities. The whole area is a marine sanctuary with a diversity of habitats ranging from the Bar Reef, flat coastal plains, saltpans, mangroves swamps, salt marshes and vast sand dune beaches.
For keen scuba divers and snorkellers, the largest coral reef in Sri Lanka (‘Bar Reef') is only an hour's boat trip from Kalpitiya. This beautiful reef is home to an incredible variety of tropical fish as well as offering sighting of Manta Rays, Reef Sharks and the occasional Turtle! This reef has recovered remarkably from the El Nino bleaching in the 1990's.
But one of the best things to do in Kalpitiya is to go Dolphin Watching! While pods of Dolphins 10-20 strong are almost always encountered a lucky few may encounter 200-300 strong shoals!
The beach site is good for swimming, wake kiting, boat riding, deep sea fishing, wind surfing, scuba diving, canoe trips, diving, catamaran sailing, wake boarding, and snorkeling. There are also shore games like beach volleyball, and the beautiful sunset view here is also an added attraction.
Leisurely boat rides up the lagoon and canoe trips down the river are a pleasant way of exploring the coastline, whilst 4WD jeep rides along the deserted sand dunes between the ocean and the lagoon offer a unique way of watching the colourful evening sunsets.
Despite its natural beauty, Kalpitiya is remarkably untouched by tourism. With the small close-knit fishing community dominating the lives of the local people, visitors can get a real insight into village life. After watching the night fishing boats return in the morning, a visit to one of the fish markets offers the opportunity to choose the evening meal direct from the fresh catch! The Dutch Fort and St Peter's Kerk church in the town itself are
interesting examples of Sri Lanka's rich history and colonial past.
NOTE: You can choose as many beach nights as you require.
