The Beach At Ahungalla

• Ahungalla has a very quiet stretch of beach with endless coconut palms looking over a clear blue ocean. The area is very famous for nesting turtles that come to the beaches to lay their eggs (Jan-July). For superb sea-bathing head a few kilometers south to Hikkaduwa with fine reef protected beaches in shallow water.

Local And Day Excursions
• The beautiful lake of the Madu Ganga River contains miniature islets, including one with
   an idyllic ancient temple and others where Cinnamon is grown and harvested.
• The Turtle Hatchery at nearby Kosgoda lies on the most famous turtle nesting beach
   in Sri Lanka (Nesting Season: Jan-July)
• The shallow beaches and coral reefs of Hikkaduwa are a local taxi ride away
  (30 minutes) and contain the island’s best snorkelling, diving and surfing breaks.
• An amazing drive on the South Coast Road takes you along some of the world’s most
  beautiful beaches to the colonial heritage town of Galle, about 1.5 hour away.
• Get up early morning and head to the Sinharaja Rainforest, where you can go on treks
  with Forest Dept guides to observe huge trees, creepers and wild orchids.

Stopover Excursions And Mini Tours
• the South East corner of the island contains Yala National Park, one of the great wildlife
  reserves of Asia and one of the best locations in the world to see Leopards.
  (stopover night required).
• Travel up into the Hill Country passing tea gardens and waterfalls to reach the legendary
  colonial Hill Station of Nuwara Eliya at 6000 ft above sea level (stopover night required).

In A Nutshell:
This hotel is nowadays considered to be Sri Lanka’s finest luxury resort. The rooms are fabulous and gorgeously furnished and the cuisine at its restaurants is top class. The only issue is the 4 hour transfer time from the Airport. The hotel is located pretty much on its own in a beautiful stretch of coastline, so it’s not in a resort area and has only a few local shops nearby. The very lively and popular resort of Hikkaduwa is however only a local taxi ride away.

Tips: An option is to have a stopover night at Colombo on the way to or from Ahungalla, thereby reducing the hassle of long Airport transfers and enabling you to do some shopping and sightseeing in the capital city.
