The Beach At Kalpitiya

• The Kalpitiya Beach is known for its corals, coconut palms, natural beauty, golden sands, and rocks. The beach is located on a wide strip of land which is bordered on the east by the immense Puttalam Lagoon and the west by the Indian Ocean. This is a place to head to if you want to avoid ‘resorts’ and crowds – it is the ideal get-away-from-it-all eco nature beach destination in Sri Lanka.

Excursions And Things To Do

Local And Day Excursions
Kalpitiya is easily the best location in Sri Lanka for Dolphin Watching. An early morning   boat ride during the season almost guarantees huge pods of dancing dolphins in the sea.
• If you venture deeper out to sea, there is also a good chance of spotting Blue and Sperm   Whales at Kalpitiya as the continental shelf drops sharply a few miles offshore.
• Water sports such as Kite Surfing and Kite Boarding are popular in the shallow lagoons   at Kalpitiya.
Wilpattu National Park lies just to the east, beyond Puttalam. It is the oldest and largest   national park in Sri Lanka with a series of pretty shallow lakes called ‘Villus’.
• The 2000 year old sacred capital city of Anuradhapura is accessible as a full day excur   sion with remains of huge stupas and the famous Sri Maha Bodhi Tree.

Stopover Excursions And Mini Tours
• It is possible to camp inside the Wilpattu National Park, a truly unforgettable experience   which allows you to spend a whole day inside the reserve and camp under the stars.
• The sights of the Cultural Triangle at Dambulla such as the Sigiriya Rock Fortress   and the Golden Cave Temple are best experienced with a stopover night at Dambulla.
• The great medieval capital of Polonnaruwa with the famous ‘’Gal Vihare’’ sculptures can   be explored with a stopover night at Giritale.

In A Nutshell:
The Dolphin Beach Resort is the place for anyone wanting an ‘eco’ type beach holiday in Sri Lanka. There are also plenty of adventure water sports available such as Kite Surfing and there is good diving and snorkelling on the pristine Bar Reef nearby. Dolphin Beach Resort is also lot more affordable than the nearby Bar Reef Resort.

Tips: Whales and Dolphins can only be see during the Winter Season from November to April.

Rooms

Luxury Tents
Luxury custom-made tents with air conditioning have been thoughtfully designed for romance and adventure. The king size beds with soft, comfortable mattresses and specially designed inner furnishings, create a cosy and intimate environment within. For rest and relaxation you are assured of privacy. At night allow the seductive sea breezes to rustle gently through the thatch and lull you to sleep against the backdrop of an ocean murmur.

Aptly named after different species of dolphins; Spinner, Bottlenose, Risso's and Pink, the tents are decadent spaces with stylish furnishings and en suite designer bathrooms enhance comfort and elegance.

The running hot and cold water and rain showers include chic innovations. All the tents are carefully sited in a shady coconut grove and have spacious verandahs. Thatch roofs and palm frond screens provide further shade during the day. The minimal vegetation under the coconut palms at Dolphin Beach keeps the resort mosquito-free. Wireless broadband connectivity is available for laptops.

Fine Dining

The open dining pavilion provides fabulous views of the ocean while you enjoy the island cuisine. Authentic Sri Lankan meals are beautifully served for breakfast and lunch, buffet style, in traditional clay pots. It is also possible to have breakfast served on the beach just adjacent to the Dining Pavilion.

An A la carte menu offers a range of international fare for dinner. Dinner buffets are often "Action Stations" where the meals are prepared in front of you. With advance notice, it is possible to organise beach barbeques too. The meals are prepared using the freshest ingredients sourced locally and purchased on the same day to ensure optimum freshness. Dolphin Beach's specialty lies in sea food, caught on the day and cooked to your preference.

Facilities

The evenings begin with a sundowner at the Dome. With a blend of the traditional and boutique and aided by specially designed lighting, the Dome has an inviting, laid back ambience. During the day, the cool blue cement floor and crisp white furnishings add a Mediterranean freshness and at sunset, the warm lights transform the Dome into a romantic, otherworldly place to ponder the day's adventures.

Up to six horses are available for a Beach Horse Safari experience with support vehicle at the rear carrying first aid equipment, a veterinary officer in charge and handlers to assist the riders. All full day rides (4-6 hours of riding) are inclusive of a picnic lunch which will be waiting for the riders at a site set up with basic facilities. At Wilpattu National Park you can sleep in customised tents and dine on gourmet meals under the stars on an overnight safari to see Sri Lanka's diverse and abundant wildlife including Leopard, Elephant and Sloth Bear, accompanied by a Wildlife Department trained tracker with an in depth knowledge of the Park and its surroundings.

Diving And Snorkelling
For keen scuba divers and snorkellers, the largest coral reef in Sri Lanka (Bar Reef) is only an hour's boat trip from Kalpitiya. This beautiful reef is home to an incredible variety of tropical fish as well as offering sighting of Manta Rays, Reef Sharks and the occasional Turtle!

Dolphin And Whale Watching
Kalpitiya is one of the best locations in the world for watching Dolphins. While pods of Dolphins 10-20 strong are almost always encountered a lucky few may encounter 200-300 strong shoals! The Dolphin watching season last from November to April. You can go out in the early hours of the morning, as the improbably calm sea glitters under the gently rising sun, to search for playful Dolphins.

Further out to sea, there are also good possibilities of spotting awe-inspiring whales as the migration corridor of Blue and Sperm Whales lies in the deep seas off the Kalpitiya peninsular.
