The Beach At Thalpe

• Apa Villas lies on the developing ‘’Galle Riviera’’, a long line of luxurious and exclusive beach villas and boutique hotels that line the Deep South Road from Galle to Weligama Bay in the extreme south of the island. The beach landscapes here are beautiful although rocks and coral formations near to the shore mean that you may have to walk a bit to find good sea bathing spots. The famous beach at Unawatuna is however just moments away.

• There are beautiful beaches along the South Coast Road including the reef protected bay   at Unawatuna, the secret beach at Mirissa and wild deserted beaches at Tangalle   further to the east.
• Nature lovers can travel to the luxuriant tropical Sinharaja Rainforest, where you can go   on treks with Forest Dept guides to observe huge trees, creepers and wild orchids.
• Mirissa is one of the best locations in the world for Whale Watching, which is possible   between December and April of each year.
• There are some little visited temples in villages nearby with exquisite ancient frescoes and   sculptures including the Kataluwa Temple at Koggala.

• The Yala National Park is the best location in the world to see Leopards in the wild, as   well as monster Crocodiles and Sloth Bears (stopover night required)

Tips: The Cardamom and Cinnamon Suites / Villas are located in the garden so are away from the main road that passes along the coast. Remember to spend a day at Apa Iluketiya, the inland villa near Galle that is located in lush vegetation in the island’s interior.

Apa Villas are three fully-staffed colonial bungalows situated in a coconut grove on the beach at Thalpe, a few miles south of Unawatuna, on Sri Lanka's South West Coast. The villa overlooks a magnificent coral beach where stilt fishermen can still be seen. Apa Villas is named after the founder of the Apa Guides - later to become famous as the Insight Guides - Hans Hoefer, and his eye for photography and design has ensured a property of considerable beauty.

Description

Apa Villas is a small boutique hotel offering some of the most refined accommodation on the resplendent south coast. From the moment you walk through the entrance way, it exudes style and charm. A long infinity pool appears to blend with the Indian Ocean beyond. A small library and board games enhance the intelligent atmosphere. Suites possess refreshing half-open bathrooms, rooms with sofa bed and king-size bed, mosquito nets, dressing table, terraco table, cement floors.

Accommodation

There are 3 villa houses in the estate as follows:

Saffron Villa / Suites - The main house which has a large central living room filled with books. A long terrace leads into two suites.

Cardamom Villa / Suites - Are made up of two large suites. Each suite has a double bed, bathroom, walk in wardrobe and a sitting room. The verandah, colonial-style banquette and chaise longue, faces the swimming pool and is comfortable for four persons or a family with children.

Cinnamon Suites - Consist of two splendid units. Each suite comes with a double bedroom, a bathroom, living room and beach-front terrace.

The two main villas are linked by a charming central courtyard. Meals can be eaten in a communal dining area, but are often served privately on your own verandah. There is a large garden with coconut groves. Relatively safe swimming is possible in the sea about 400m to the south.

You may rent a single villa (sleeping 2-4), which is an ideal option for a family. Larger parties of up to 12 people can book all three villas together. Suites may also be booked individually for couples. Children under 10 are free at Apa Villas.

Facilities

The villa is very close to the historic Dutch Fort at Galle which contains a perfectly preserved ‘old town’ with buildings dating from the Dutch colonial period. Boat trips are possible to explore the still waters of Koggala Lake. Take a rowing boat out to the island temple and visit the bird sanctuary.

Close by is the sun kissed beach at Unawatuna, described by some as one of the 20 best beaches in the world. The wildlife parks of Yala and Bundala are also within reach.
